What to expect when you call or text
The “What to expect” page describes that a 9-8-8 responder will:
- Listen without judgment
- Engage with empathy
- Support you in exploring ways to create safety when things feel overwhelming
When you call, you may:
- Hear a brief recorded message
- Choose English or French
- In most cases, choose to indicate if you are under 18 or First Nations, Inuit, or Métis
- In some parts of Canada, be connected to the existing crisis service in your province/territory
Accessibility
If you are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, 9-8-8 lists three ways to get help:
- Canada Video Relay Service (Canada VRS) (ASL/LSQ via video interpreter)
- TTY / IP Relay Services (dial 7-1-1 for TTY relay)
- Text 9-8-8
Cost
- Calling is toll-free (including from payphones, as noted in the FAQ).
