What to expect when you call or text

The “What to expect” page describes that a 9-8-8 responder will:

  • Listen without judgment
  • Engage with empathy
  • Support you in exploring ways to create safety when things feel overwhelming

When you call, you may:

  • Hear a brief recorded message
  • Choose English or French
  • In most cases, choose to indicate if you are under 18 or First Nations, Inuit, or Métis
  • In some parts of Canada, be connected to the existing crisis service in your province/territory

Accessibility

If you are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, 9-8-8 lists three ways to get help:

  • Canada Video Relay Service (Canada VRS) (ASL/LSQ via video interpreter)
  • TTY / IP Relay Services (dial 7-1-1 for TTY relay)
  • Text 9-8-8

Cost

  • Calling is toll-free (including from payphones, as noted in the FAQ).
  • Standard carrier texting rates may apply depending on your plan.
